Hemispheres Arts Academy was created by Rob Fong in 2000, during his tenure on the Sacramento City Unified School District Board of Trustees. Recognizing the need to provide children with more creative opportunities due to a reduction in funding for school arts programs, Mr. Fong formed the non-profit as a free after school arts program with a mission of bringing students interested in the arts together with professional artists in Sacramento.
The program began with a $100,000 donation from Maloof Sports & Entertainment. Classes were held in the abandoned school district headquarters at 16th & N Streets. There, kids participated in all manner of visual and performing art classes, including photography, music, drawing, sculpture, drama, painting and dance.
Eventually the district needed to take the building back which caused Hemispheres to reinvent itself. Now, Hemispheres Arts Academy exists as a grant funding organization partnering with other non-profits and school districts who are committed to proving programs which allow children to have an educational experience infused by the magic and creativity of the visual and performing arts.
Roast for the Arts
The Roast for the Arts is the signature fundraising event of Hemispheres Arts Academy. For this event, Hemispheres Board members select a Sacramento community leader to be roasted in the fashion of the Las Vegas, Dean Martin Celebrity roasts.
Six to seven local celebrity roasters are chosen for the honor of grilling our roastee. Each year Rob Fong, President of the Board, and the ubiquitous Master of Ceremonies, presides over this memorable event. read more...
